Kits News - 13th May 2022
The Kits have had a great week this week and our topic book was We Wear Pants by Katie Abey. The book is all about getting dressed and we find out all the characters’ favourite clothes. The book offered a great opportunity for the children to express their own opinions on which clothes are their favourite and we have been practising putting our hands up and waiting for our turn to speak.
We have also been talking about potty training and focusing on developing the children’s self-care. We took inspiration from our topic book and set up our role-play area as a clothes shop where the children have all enjoyed dressing up in a variety of costumes including hats and sunglasses! As well as being great fun these activities support the children’s personal, social and emotional development as they develop their independence in dressing themselves.
During our Art activity this week we have been creating our own T-shirts. The children began by dying them their choice of colour and listened carefully to their teacher’s instructions to use the spoon to move the material in the coloured water. We hung them up on our washing line outside and once they were dry the Kits added further detail, using coloured textile paint. The children were all very proud of their creations and we have some budding fashion designers amongst us!
During Science this week we continued to explore colour. We used pipettes to squirt vinegar on to bicarbonate of soda and the children all predicted what they thought would happen next. After we made our predictions, we mixed the two together and everyone was very excited to see the bubbles, exclaiming that it was “getting bigger.” This activity was based around the children’s interest and enjoyment in using the pipettes which they have been able to use throughout the week to suck and squirt water. They also provide a brilliant way to refine their fine motor skills and pincer grip.
During our Maths Focus Time, we learnt about full and empty and talked about half-full with the older children. In our Literacy Focus Time, we looked at phonics and concentrated on distinguishing the initial sound of a word as we explored the toys in the sound boxes. The children love exploring these small toys and they support the children’s ability to distinguish different phonic sounds as they play with items such as a sun, snail, skittle and star.
