Kits News - 21st January 2022
The Kits have had a fun filled week this week. We have taken inspiration from our topic book Mine! By Hiawyn Oram by engaging in lots of teamwork activities and practising our sharing skills.
The story is about a little girl who struggles to share her toys with her friends, and it has been a great platform to discuss why sharing is important, as well as linking to our Classroom Principles of ‘Taking Turns’ and ‘Kind Hearts’.
To explore this further, we engaged in activities both as a group and in pairs in Art, where we shared the paper and resources together to make beautiful big group collages and paintings. We were so impressed with how well everyone handled the resources, with everyone remembering to take turns and to ask each other when they would like a turn with one of the materials.
In Cookery we worked together as a team to cut up the mushrooms, spread the tomato sauce and sprinkle the cheese to make a big pizza. Once the pizza was cooked the children were very proud with their achievements and loved cutting it up so that we could share it between us at the end of the day.
In the Outdoor Learning Environment, we used the sand timers to share the trucks and the children patiently waited for their turn. We continuously focus on extending the children’s communication and language through introducing new vocabulary and this week we talked a lot about ‘patience’. We spoke about what patience means and what patience looks like in our everyday actions. The children took this on board and were verry proud to show their patience in how they waited for their turns.
Our Role Play Area has been set up as a ‘Fire Station’ and the Kits have had great fun coming to the rescue in their ‘Fire Engines’ with their hoses to put out the fires. The children vote for the role play area each week and love getting involved in painting the props we use to help create the scene. The role play was so popular that we also extended the theme into our small world play where the Kits supported the fire fighters to save the people in the doll’s house!
During our Communication and Language Focus Time we concentrated on the ‘a’ phoneme and in Maths we went on a number hunt in the Outdoor Learning Environment. The children loved finding the numerals hidden around the climbing frame and we continued this on Friday by looking for numbers in the environment during our Community Walk.
