Kits News - 24th May 2024
The Kits have had an action-packed week and have loved learning about the emergency services through our topic book Emergency! by Margaret Mayo and Alex Ayliffe.
During the week the children participated in a ‘Mission Air Ambulance' fundraiser for the Children’s Air Ambulance. When a child is too sick to travel, they fly medical teams and bespoke equipment to them from across the UK, turning their local hospital into a specialist centre. The children have set themselves the goal of walking a half marathon to raise funds and the Kits have been busy walking and learning about what an air ambulance does.
For our Art project this week the children made helicopter propellers and they proudly wore them on their backs as they completed their final fundraising walks, where we pretended to fly the ‘sick baby’ to the hospital. The children have been amazing at walking so far and we would like to thank everyone for their generous donations.
During our Focus Time lesson we learnt about the emergency services in more detail and discussed the differences between them. The children learnt to call 999 in an emergency and they talked about their own visits to hospitals as well as recalling our recent trip to Tooting Fire Station.
Our Role-Play Area has been set up as a ‘Hospital’ and the children have been busy tending to their babies needs with medicine, stethoscopes and bandages, sharing the resources with their friends and developing their vocabulary as they talked about the different medical tools.
During our Science Focus Time on Thursday we explored how helicopter propellers work as we made our own paper helicopters and had great fun watching as they spun to the floor in the classroom and in the Outdoor Learning Environment. The children were excited to take them home and proudly showed them to their families and carers at pick up.
