This week our topic book was Aliens Love Underpants by Claire Freedman. We chose this topic to support the children’s potty training and the story has offered a great way to discuss using their big boy and girl pants. We also enjoyed talking about the different pants the aliens were wearing too!
We have embraced the theme of Space and aliens and have enjoyed engaging in a variety of Space themed activities throughout the week. In Art we made starry Space pictures and explored different painting techniques. We used dark coloured water colours to make a night sky and then sprinkled salt on top to leave a patterned effect. We then had great fun dribbling and shaking glitter over the top and adding stickers to make some truly starry skies!
Our role-play area has been set up as a ‘Space Station’ and we also added our own ‘Rocket Ship’ which the children jumped in and pretended to fly to distant planets. They dressed up as astronauts and aliens and developed their communication and language skills and vocabulary as we learnt the planet names and talked about what the weather and environment it is like on them.
During our Maths Focus Time, we embraced the ‘Loose Parts’ where the children made arrangements and patterns with gems on black paper to represent a ‘Night Sky’. The children counted the gems and discussed with the teachers the shapes they could see in their arrangements.
On Thursday we baked ‘Moon Rock’ cookies. The children love chopping the fruit at snack time and we supported this further in our cooking activity where they chopped and mashed the bananas and then developed their hand strength as they squeezed the juice out of the orange using an orange squeezer. They then mixed the mashed bananas and orange juice with oats and rolled the mixture into balls ready to bake. They smelt delicious while cooking and we all enjoyed eating them at snack time the next day!
