Our Topic book this week was Feelings by Alice Le Hénand and we have used the story to open up discussions about feelings and emotions with the children. Developing the children’s emotional literacy is critical, both as part of their communication and language development and their personal, social and emotional development. Being able to describe how they feel and being able to discuss this with their teachers, friends or family to explain why they may be feeling that way, helps them to be able to manage their emotions and find solutions to help them when they may be sad or cross.

We have been incorporating learning about feelings and emotions into the curriculum throughout the week both in Free Play and during our small group Focus Time lessons. During our Communication and Language Focus Time we discussed emotions in small groups as we looked at different photos of people with different expressions. We named and discussed the emotions with the children and they then had a turn to act them out themselves with some lovely happy, sad and even mad faces!

During Free Play we made faces with the playdough and during Art we created our own faces by sticking eyes, ears, noses and mouths onto a painted face. During the activity we looked at ourselves in the mirrors and talked about how many features we have and what they look like. We have also engaged in small world play with the dolls’ house people and recalled events in our home life which have made us happy or sad.

The children have also been talking a lot this week about the fireworks they have seen or are going to see. We created some firework paintings before half term and continued this theme with the children in our Science activity this week. The children mixed food colouring with oil and then poured it into a jar of water. They were amazed as the food colouring slowly dripped out of the oil and ‘exploded’ in the water giving a firework effect in the jar.

We are looking forward to hearing more of their firework stories next week!
