Kits News - February 11th 2022

The Kits’ topic book this week has been Mr. Tongue. It’s a wonderful book written by Speech and Language therapists to support the children’s language development as it asks the reader to make a variety of different sounds to accompany Mr. Tongue’s adventures.

The children have loved interacting with the story, and we have had great fun exploring how to make the different sounds with our mouths and wiggling our tongues!

We took inspiration from our topic book in Art where we made megaphones to help us emphasise the sounds! The megaphones helped to accentuate our voices and we loved using them to make ‘oooooo’, ‘eeeeeee’ and ‘aaaaaaaa’ sounds.

In Cookery, we had an exciting food tasting activity where the children had the opportunity to try different fruits and vegetables. The activity developed the children’s personal, social and emotional development as they took risks, trying new foods, and developed their communication and language as we explored new descriptive language.

The children showed confidence and independence in voicing their opinions as to whether they liked the foods or not and described the different tastes and textures. We noticed that some fruits were sweet and others such as the grapefruit made them a little bit “shivery”!

We promote healthy eating at 345 Balham, so this activity gave us a great opportunity to explore new fruits and vegetables with the children. If the children weren’t sure whether they wanted to eat the different foods then they were still brave enough to either lick or smell them, which we were very proud of.

Our role-play area has been set up as a ‘Baby Day Care’ this week and the Kits have loved taking care of the babies. They have carefully made cots for them and fed them bottles of milk. This has supported the children’s self-care as they have practised with clothes and fastenings to get the babies dressed and ready for the day.

This week we have also continued to develop the children’s gross motor skills and confidence to take on physical activities in our Outdoor Learning Environment. The children particularly enjoy walking along the logs which helps them to develop their balance and confidence as they carefully step from one to another. The children are slowly learning to jump from the logs too and towards the end of the week we moved them on top of the Astro turf so that the children could push themselves and take further risks as they jumped from the logs onto the grass.
