Squirrels News - 11th November 2022

This week we have been celebrating music and to support our learning we chose the topic book The Story Orchestra: Four Seasons In One Day which looks at the music by the composer Vivaldi.

The children absolutely loved listening to all the wonderful sounds of the orchestra and were then transported to the orchestra themselves during our Orchestral workshop. The Squirrels were captivated by the string, wind and brass instruments and we were lucky enough to have a go at being conductors, learning how to move their arms up and down and to feel the vibrations of the music.

Back in the classroom we continued our learning by exploring different musical instruments and practising playing loud, soft, fast and slow. We continued our musical focus on our Outdoor Learning Day where we created music using natural objects and our bodies! The children recognised that music was all around us, as our feet crunched the leaves on the autumnal floor, in the sound of the wind blowing in the trees and in the trains as they whizzed past.

This week we also discussed the importance of Remembrance Day and created our own poppies. During our Outdoor Learning Day the children spotted people wearing poppies and also noticed poppies in the shop windows. We introduced the concept of remebering, explaining what it means and why we do it.

During our indoor and outdoor play this week we explored numbers and CVC words. We also developed our gross motor skills by balancing on the beams and practicing how to jump off the step.

Our ‘Fire Station’ Role Play was a big hit as the children raced to rescue people in an emergency and all of the Squirrels did amazingly well in Spanish when learning and recalling colours.
