This week our topic book was 10 things I can do to help my world by Melanie Walsh. The book offered a brilliant platform to expand our understanding of the world around around us and encouraged conversations about what our responsibility is to look after it. In the book we learned of lots of simple changes we can all make to help the planet including turning off the TV and the lights when we are not using them and turning the tap off when we are brushing our teeth. The children loved this book and we had a wonderful week thinking of all the different ways we can help to save our world.
To go alongside this theme we turned our Role Play into a Recycling Centre. This was a great way for the children to learn how sort materials and it was lovely to see everyone working together and incorporating their own knowledge fo sort the food, plastic, card and glass into different bins.
In Art we thought of the 10 steps in our book and focused on looking at numbers 1-10. We worked to identify them and then decorated them to match the points in the book.
Around the class we saved the jungle and sea creatures from all the rubbish people had left behind. We also enjoyed practising our patterns, building puzzles, developing the muscles in our hands using firm putty and developing our recognition of coins in our class ‘shop’.
Another exciting part of our week was going to Dew Drop Inn where we played Kim's game with the ladies who attended this session. The children worked alongside the ladies to remember which objects were on their trays once they were covered over. Everyone had a great time with lots of laughs and big smiles.
When the time came for our Outdoor Learning Day the children were very excited to discover we were picking up litter! Unfortunately it was quite sad as we saw so much and were unable to collect it all. Next week we will pick up litter on our community walk as the children enjoyed it so much this week. It was wonderful to see how engrossed the children were with this topic and their desire to help care for our world – what a wonderful value to have!
