Squirrels News - 4th October 2024

The Squirrels have had a wonderful time in Art this week creating paper plate gardens. They used all sorts of items to create their beautifully landscaped pieces. Starting with a paper plate the children painted the sky, soil and grass before choosing how to create their flowers. Some chose to put their flowers in compostable pots and others created gravel in the soil and put their flowers straight into that. They then used lolly sticks, tissue paper, decomposable sequins and pompoms for the flowers and stems. We also discussed the importance of roots which the children created using wool.

The garden idea was inspired by our book of the week ‘My Grandparents Love Me.’ In our discussions about the book, lots of the children said they played in the garden or went to the park with their grandparents. We have also been exploring flowers a lot this week in the messy try as the children developed the muscles in their hands and scissor skills by cutting up flowers which had been on display in our classroom.

In Literacy the children wrote things they like to do with their grandparents with every child giving a unique answer, from blowing bubbles with them to having them look after them when their parents are out. In Numeracy we have been focusing on number recognition as well as number object correspondence. Our class Role Play this week was a Home Corner and it was a hive of activity as the children took care of the baby and made lots of food and drink to share with all the family. They even re-enacted our trip to the café last week by creating babycinos for their peers.

In Music with Miss Leisa the children practised various songs they have chosen to sing on Monday when their grandparents come into the nursery. We also enjoyed our wonderful high energy Spanish session of the week. which is always a highlight for the Squirrels, where they learn through song, movement, visuals and speech. This week they learnt parts of Pedrico’s body (the Spanish bird mascot) as well as their own.

During our Outdoor Learning Day the children developed their climbing skills and this week we focused on getting muddy as we took some of the mud kitchen equipment out with us.
