Squirrels News - January 28th 2022
Our topic book this week was Counting Lions. This is a lovely book which introduces us to different animals from around the world. Each page contains different animals alongside stunning pencil drawings and beautiful poetic text. The book provided loads of rich opportunities for. Learning more about animals, the habitats they live in and introducing us to new vocabulary.
We took inspiration from the book in Art where we experimented with using charcoal to copy the wonderful pictures from the book. Everyone tried extremely hard, paying close attention to the detail in the images.
In Literacy we were excited to try and write our own poems. We tried to think about details such as what the animals look like, how they move, their mannerisms and which habitats they live in. The children loved this exercise and thought of a variety of ways the animals could be described. When thinking about how we would write our poems we also discussed and learned about rhyme and the ways we could include it into our own writing.
One of the highlights of our learning this week was expanding our knowledge of habitats and learning about how and why certain animals migrate. The children were fascinated by all the various habitats and loved learning a range of new words. They Squirrels were particularly excited by the word ‘migration’ and one child announced "I will be migrating to Mexico for a while in a few days. It's too cold here!"
We had another brilliant Outdoor Learning Day and this week we created story stones. In this activity everyone was given different task and object to draw for example to draw a particular mode of transport or character. When everyone had finished, we used the stones as a group to create a wonderful story about three friends and the adventures they got up to. The children each had to think of an idea and way to continue the story with their stone. They thought of brilliant ideas, and we were so impressed with the ways they responded to each other and how they adapted the story as they went along. It was a wonderful class effort, and we created a fantastic story. It has been another great end to a wonderful week!
