Squirrels News - 7th June 2024
This week the Squirrels have been exploring their new topic book I Really Want to Win by SImon Philip. The book is about a child determined to win various things she is good at such as running, tug of war, dancing and spelling. Unfortunately even though she is good at these things she doesn’t win but as the book goes on we learn that actually this is ok because she had fun trying and enjoyed the activities she took part in. It isn't all about winning. The book also helped teach us that that if you don't win you can be happy for others. As the book draws to a close the child does win a baking competition but they go into it knowing that they are proud of what they have baked and if they win, that is a bonus.
This has been a great story for the children with Sports Day coming up and also for everyday life. On our Outdoor Learning Day this week when we practiced the Sports Day races the children were getting much better at not worrying if they came first or not whilst still trying their best.
In Art we have been making props for Sports Day with lots of enthusiasm and in one of our Focus Times we drew a picture of something we are good at and then wrote what that was underneath. We had all sorts of wonderful answers such as golf, playing cars, swimming to daddy without armbands and football.
In another Focus time we looked at the difference between squares and rectangles. Around the classroom we have loved serving up ice cream in our Squirrels ice cream parlour, practicing narrating our own stories using objects and story dice as well as developing our hand muscles using various shaped hole punches.
What a fun week we have all had, bring on the next one!
