Kits News - 11th October 2024

This week the Kits Topic book was ‘Goldilocks and the Three Bears’ by Nick Sharratt and Stephen Tucker. This book is a traditional fairytale, retold in a witty contemporary verse. The children have loved re-telling parts of the story and re-enacting it during Free Play and our Focus Time Activities using props.

The Role Play Area was set up as The Three Bears House where the children used their imagination to make ‘porridge’ using utensils, pots, bowls and pretend foods. We also discussed the three different sizes of bowls, spoons and compared the sizes of the bears.

In the Messy tray the children explored with gloop and different sized shapes, focusing on 2D shape names and the three different sizes; small, medium and big. The Kits loved making pretend Bear Soup using the compare bears, spoons, pots and water. They practiced spooning the bears into different pots and looked at the different sized bears. The children also practised naming the different colours.

On the Maths table the children enjoyed completing the Compare Bear Cards by identifying the correct size bear and colour to match accordingly. The Kits were also keen to explore the Bear Magnetic Puzzles where they dressed the three bears, which were in different sizes. The weighing Scales with Unifix cubes were a great activity to extend the Kits learning, where we discussed and were able to observe the difference between heavy and light by adding more Unifix Cubes and less.

In our Maths Focus lesson we re-capped our learning of the three different sizes; small, medium and big The children matched objects which were different sizes to the correct sized bear.

The Kits have been strengthening their hand muscles by threading beads onto pipe cleaners which were attached to three different sized faces. They also used colanders and pipe cleaners to practise their Fine Motor Skills. We even named the different coloured pipe cleaners. The Kits explored playdough, cutters in three different sizes; small, medium and large. The children also used rolling pins as well as their hands to manipulate the dough in several ways. For our Fine Motor Activity the children placed small pom poms into pine cones, practising to use their pincer grip.

During our Outdoor Learning Environment the Kits loved participating in our 345 Tea Party with their friends, where they made tea and coffee using lots of imagination. The had cakes, soup and pasta as well.

In our Cookery lesson the children practised chopping and peeling a variety of fruits before decorating their porridge faces in aid of Mary’s Meals. We discussed how charities like Mary’s Meals provide children with food for people less fortunate than us and how important it is to use our Kind Hearts to share food with others and to be kind to one another.

During our Art this week the children made a painted picture of a bear by using a symmetrical effect. They then added the fine details to the bear's face.

For our Community Walk, we looked out for different sized objects. We found three different sized pumpkins; small, medium and big. We also noticed many big and small buses there were on our journey.

The Kits have had another busy and fun week. We look forward to another amazing week at 345 Balham!
