Kits News - 18th November 2022
This week our topic book was Seek and Count by Yusuke Yonezu and we have been busy spending the week focusing on counting and number recognition.
It has been a wet and rainy week but it has not stopped us from going on number hunts in the Outdoor Learning Environment and during our Community Walks. The children have been really excited as they have started to recognise the numbers in our environment and we spotted them on buses, cars, doors, street signs and parking machines.
We continued our learning inside the classroom by exploring numbers in free play and we stamped numbers on our activity sheets during our Maths Focus Time. We have also been exploring the ‘Loose Parts’ and used the small discs of wood, cinnamon sticks and star anise to cover the lines of the numbers written on the table, familiarising ourselves with what they look like.
The children love cooking and during our Cookery Focus Time this week we got our hands messy making some delicious ‘Number Cheese Pastries’. The children all participated in measuring the butter, flour and cheese and then mixed them together with their hands, exploring the texture of the dough. Once combined we shaped the dough with our hands and pressed resin numbers into it to leave an indentation behind. The children were excited to see the numbers they had created, calling out the ones they recognised with some children even reaching double digits with “Fourteen!”
On Friday we refined our fine motor skills as we scrunched and stuck tissue paper onto different numbers drawn onto the paper and also practised using the glue sticks. On Friday we also engaged in some ‘free baking’. The children loved making the cheese pastries in our Focus Time on Thursday so much that we thought we would let them explore baking further during Free Play. We provided them with some flour, yeast, and water and supported them into getting the dough the right consistency and left them to make their own bread rolls which we then cooked and ate at Snack Time. They smelt delicious while cooking and the children were really proud and excited to eat their rolls at Snack Time!
