Kits News – 22nd April 2022

The Kits have had a great first week back at Nursery after the Easter holidays. It has been wonderful to hear the children’s news and we have loved listening to their stories about holidays and time spent with family and friends.

We rearranged the Kits classroom over the break and the children have been excited to explore the new layout. They have also enjoyed reacquainting themselves with the resources and especially our class pet ‘Mr Hamster’, who they have loved to help feed.

Our topic book this week was Sharing Time by Elizabeth Verdick. In the story we learn about the importance of sharing and how others might feel when we don’t share with them and this has offered a great opportunity to revisit our Classroom Principles with the children after the break.

We continued to focus on sharing during our Cookery activity on Thursday, where we made some delicious cheese pastries with the children. The Kits helped each other to measure out the different ingredients and we explored textures as we used our fingers to rub the butter and flour together. The children also developed their hand strength as they rolled, squashed and patted the dough into a variety of different shapes. As we made the pastries, we explained that we would cook them and then share them with each other the next day at Snack Time, which we did and they were delicious!

This week on Friday 22nd April, we also celebrated ‘Earth Day’. We talked to the children about planet Earth and how and why we need to protect its environment. We went on to explore the colours of the planet and its shape by using balloons to print Earth paintings which we decorated with cotton wool to make the clouds.

During our Fine Motor Focus Time activity, we continued our focus on Earth and the children used pipettes to suck up blue and green water and squirted it onto coffee filters to make blue and green Earth pictures. We talked about how the sea is blue and the forests, grass and woods are green and the children also named some of the birds, animals and marine life which live in these different environments.
