Kits News - 23rd February 2024
The Kits had a wonderful week this week and the children thoroughly enjoyed our topic book The Digger and the Flower by Joseph Kuefler. Throughout the week we have been exploring different tools and machines and talking about how we can care and look after flowers.
In our Art project we got our hands messy as we used cars to drive through mud and then used them to paint muddy tracks on the paper. The children then later added real flowers to their pictures, talking about where they can find flowers at home and on the common.
Our Role-Play Area has been set up as a ‘Construction Site’ for the week and the children have had great fun dressing up as builders and learning how to use a variety of different tools. They used hammers to hammer golf tees into polystyrene blocks, drills to make holes in cardboard boxes and used plastic saws to pretend to saw wood. The children developed their gross motor skills through these activities and developed their vocabulary as they learnt the names of the different tools. They were very animated while playing and thoroughly embraced the role of a builder, wearing high vis vests, goggles and helmets to keep them safe.
In our Maths Focus Time this week we learnt about shapes and the children are quickly developing their shape knowledge, proudly showing their teachers ‘semi-circles’ and ‘rectangles’. They then matched shapes to those on their activity sheets to make pictures of diggers. They were very proud of the results and held their sheets up for their teachers to see.
During our Cookery Focus Time, we made yummy ‘Mud Cookies’. The cookies were made from oats, cinnamon and bananas and the children were able to make them independently. They developed their hand strength as they used knives to cut the bananas and then mashers to mash them before mixing them together with the oats. They smelt delicious while cooking and all the children were very proud to take them home at the end of the day.
