Squirrels News - 9th February 2024

To celebrate the Lunar New Year we have been learning all about the celebration and some of the traditions around the world. Our book of the week was The Great Race by Emily Hiles and alongside this we have been looking at various other fiction and non-fiction books to support the topic.

As it is the year of the Dragon we have been creating our very own Dragons in Art. The children first painted their toilet roll red inside and out before using the packaging from some satsumas to sponge on gold scales. We used pom poms and googly eyes to make the dragon’s face and developed our cutting skills as we cut strips of tissue paper to become fire billowing from the dragon’s mouth. All of the children were very focused during this art activity and loved the various elements to the process.

The highlight of our week was turning our Role Play Filipino restaurant into a real Filipino restaurant thanks to one of the children's family who have Filipino heritage. We are extremely grateful to them for cooking for us but also for taking into account any dietary requirements which were necessary. The food was amazing the children had great fun trying it whilst listening to music from the Philippines. There were lots of thumbs up for a Filipino favourite ‘Adobe’ as well as the amazing spring rolls, rice and sauce. It truly was a culinary delight!

In Spanish with Miss Rosana we continued to focus on learning the days of the week through music and dance. For our Outdoor Learning Day this week we took rulers to measure the sizes of different sticks to order them and noticed the signs of spring.
