Kits News - 28th June 2024

The Kits have had a fun week in the sunshine and we have been spending the week learning about oral hygiene with our topic book ‘Alan’s Big Scary Teeth’ by Jarvis. Our role-play area has been set up as a Dentists for the week and the children have been busy brushing the false teeth clean and exploring the different dental equipment. We talked about our own experiences of visiting the dentist and how there is a big chair and many of the children said they got a sticker when they finished. We have also been engaging in activities such as brushing dinosaurs’ teeth in the messy tray and painting with toothpaste using toothbrushes, which smelt lovely and minty too! These activities have supported the development of the children’s fine motor skills and hand strength as they have used different tools such as brushes and led onto conversations about their own teeth brushing routines at home.

In our Maths Focus Time, we practised counting and talked about how many teeth we have as we placed beans in playdough to represent teeth in a mouth. The children were very good at using their pincer grip to pick up the small beans and place them in the playdough, counting how many they had. We also looked in the mirror at our own teeth and talked about how when we are bigger they may fall out as we get new teeth like some of the children’s older siblings have experienced already.

We have also been talking about healthy eating and in our Communication and Language Focus Time talked about healthy foods such as fruit, cheese and vegetables which can also help keep our bodies healthy as they provide us with vitamins and minerals. We kept the healthy eating theme going for our Cookery Focus Time during which the children threaded grapes and strawberries onto a stick to made delicious fruit kebabs.
