Kits News – 29th April 2022

This week our topic book was 10 Seeds by Ruth Brown. The book is about ten sunflower seeds which start to grow but then get eaten by slugs and birds and hit by balls! Eventually only one seed remains. The seed goes on to grow into a beautiful sunflower and when it is fully grown it produces ten more seeds. It has been a great platform to learn about how plants grow and what we need to do to care for them! It has been a particularly good time to introduce the children to the topic at the beginning of the Summer Term when we have begun to plant our own flowers. The Kits, with their newfound knowledge have had the opportunity to get messy with the mud and wet with the water which they have absolutely loved!

To prepare our Outdoor Learning Environment for the Summer months, we bought some new plants for the from the local market during our Community Walk and the children have loved planting them this week. We talked about the fact that plants need water and sunshine to grow and the children were fascinated to see and learn about roots.

Taking inspiration from our topic book, we also decided to plant some sunflower seeds and we are all very excited to see how tall they grow!

During Art we have been spent the week using our hands to explore different media and textures by painting with mud and sticking real flowers onto our pictures to make our own gardens. During the Art activity we consolidated our knowledge by recapping the different parts of a plant as well as discussing the different colours and textures of the flowers, petals and leaves.

During our Literacy Focus Time this week, we have been focusing on phonics and going back over the Animaphonics we learnt last term. The children love the bright pictures and actions which accompany them and they are quickly picking up the sounds of the different phonemes.

The construction tools have been popular with the children and we decided to extend their interest further in a Focus Time activity on Thursday where we explored deconstruction.

The Kits were able to use real tools to take apart old electrical appliances such as DVD players and speakers. We discussed safety first, explaining that the tools can be sharp and then the children set to work with screwdrivers, plyers and hex keys to take the appliances apart. The children loved having the independence and creativity to explore the appliances and we used this as an opportunity to discuss the different components of the appliances and learned about resistors, circuit boards, electricity and wires.
