Kits News – 6th May 2022
Our topic book this week was We are all Wonders by R.J. Palacio and it has been a great platform to discuss the differences and similarities between us.
We continued this theme in Art by making self-portraits, where we used the mirrors to help us explore our facial features in detail. We also refined our fine motor skills by using the playdough to add features to blank faces and discussing what emotions our faces had, describing whether the faces were happy or sad.
In our Maths Focus Time activity, we went on a number hunt in the Outdoor Learning Environment and the classroom and looked at some counting books. The older children are becoming much more confident in their number recognition, and it is wonderful to hear the younger children start to recite some of the number names too.
To extend the children’s interest in the animals we have spotted on our Community Walks, we decided to set our Role Play Area up as a ‘Vet’. The children have loved caring for the animals, wrapping their sore noses and paws in bandages and giving them food, water and medicine to make them feel better.
Last week our topic book was about growing, and the children have continued to show a keen interest in flowers and plants. We decided to extend our learning further with a flower deconstruction activity where we used magnifying glasses to look at the stems, leaves and petals up close and to notice all the different details.
The children have also loved engaging in imaginary role play with our mud kitchen and the two came together beautifully when some of the Kits decided to use the deconstructed flowers and petals to make a variety of imaginary soups.
We extended this in our Cookery Focus Time by making a real vegetable soup. The children developed their hand strength as they used knives to cut the different cooked and soft vegetables and scissors to snip the chives. As we made the soup we talked about the different ingredients and the different types of soup we like to eat at home.
