Squirrels News - 16th June 2023

The Squirrels have had a lovely week this week exploring our topic book That's My Daddy! by Ruth Redford. The children have been talking about their Daddies throughout week in preparation for ‘Bring Daddy to School Day’ which was on Friday morning. During the morning the children loved spending some time reading books, playing with their Daddies and made some crowns for our Sports Day using a variety of different materials. At the end of the morning the Daddies joined the Squirrels for a short Music session with Miss Leisa and we enjoyed singing our favourite songs with them. It was wonderful to have them visit and we hope they enjoyed it too!

The children’s literacy skills have continued to develop and it is wonderful to see their progress and enjoyment with independent writing. This week we wrote a sentence about our Daddies and I loved hearing all the things they do with them, including playing with cars, going to the park as well as tickling and hiding marshmallows in their ears!

This week we also played with the animals and this led to lots of interesting conversations about where they live and what they eat. This prompted the teachers to show the children how to safely use the internet to find the answers to their questions. We talked about polar creatures and the children used warm water to melt the ice and set the frozen animals free.

The children have been spending time constructing with a range of different resources such as the plastic domes, Lego and wooden blocks. This play has led to discussions about different buildings and towers they have visited from around the world, including the Eiffel Tower, the ‘Walkie Talkie Building’ and the ‘Burj Khalifa’. The children worked collaboratively together as they built the towers and developed their critical thinking as they worked out different ways to make them balance.
