Squirrels News - 16th September
Our first full week back at nursery has been extremely busy as we commemorated the life of the Queen. We also spent the week reflecting on our topic book Our Class is a Family by Shannon Olsen to think about the ways our own class is like a family too.
We thought about the Queen's life and learned about her reign in various different ways throughout the week. In one of our Fine Motor Skills activities the children developed their hand strength by using playdough, buttons and pom-poms to decorate crowns. During Snack Time we shared some of the books we had read during the Queen's Jubilee earlier this year and enjoyed looking at all the different pictures spanning the length of her reign.
We continued our focus on the Queen on our Outdoor Learning Day by making portraits. We discovered various ways of making marks and spoke about the different ways we could create art using sticks and natural materials around us. The children began by collecting a range of natural objects before setting to work to make some wonderful portraits of the Queen, thinking about all the features they needed to add. The favourite addition by all the children however was definitely the crown!
Back in the classroom we have continued our focus on number recognition and have been practising our initial letter sounds. We have also been supporting the children in their emotional intelligence by exploring our emotions and thinking about what makes us happy, sad, angry, scared and why we feel these emotions.
Around the class we have also been developing our cutting skills, talking about oral health as we brushed the dinosaur's teeth and developing our social skills by taking turns and sharing resources. We have had a lot of fun building our imaginative play skills on the farm in our small world activity and in our role play airport where the children have been combining their real life experiences with their imagination!
It has been a lovely first full week back at school with the children getting involved in all areas of learning and we can’t wait to see what next week brings.
