Squirrels News - 17th March 2023
This week has all been about Mummies as we prepared for 'Bring Mummy to School' day as well as Mothering Sunday. To complement our celebrations we chose the topic book I Love my Mummy by Giles Andrea.
We used this book to open up discussions about the reasons why we love our Mummy's and then practised our pen control and letter formation as we wrote them down. The children thought of beautiful examples of why their Mummy's are so wonderful such as "I love my Mummy because she is soft to cuddle." "I love my Mummy because she reads to me" and "I love my Mummy because she takes me to nice places." We then used pencils to draw detailed pictures of our Mummy's, focusing on features we needed to include and colours, such as the colour of our Mummy’s eyes and hair.
In Art we created a wonderful Mother's Day card using our handprint and fingertips as flowers before we wrote our cards. As a special treat the Squirrels also baked heart cranberry and apricot cookies for their Mummy's which, having had a sneaky taste of the extras we all agreed were delicious.
On Thursday the time finally came to welcome our Mummies into the nursery Everyone was so excited and the children loved setting to work to make Easter bonnets with their special adults. After everyone had finished making their creations the children treated their Mummy's to some special songs and we read our book of the week.
On Friday we were all excited to head out on our Outdoor Learning Day where we used the wet weather to our advantage by focusing on capacity and using various receptacles to capture rainwater. The children predicted how much rainwater would be in each container before we measured the total liquid using a ruler.
