Squirrels News - 20th January 2023
To celebrate the Lunar New Year this Sunday we have been learning all about the celebration and some of the traditions that people take part in around the world. Our book of the week was I Love Chinese New Year by Eva Wong Nava and alongside this we have been looking at various other fiction and non-fiction books to support the topic.
As it is the year of the rabbit we have been creating our very own rabbits in Art. The children have been cutting and sticking various items onto the rabbit’s face to make its facial features and have been developing their fine motor skills by threading ribbon along the rabbit’s ears. The children then used spilt pins to attach the ears to the rabbits head so that they could move. All of the children were very focused during this art activity and loved the various elements needed to create their finished rabbit!
During Focus times this week we have been practising our recall by recounting our Weekend News and developing our pen grip and control by writing a sentence about our weekend onto paper afterwards. Some of the Squirrels traced over yellow words whilst others practised writing a few words independently by copying words above and some were able to copy the whole sentence!
In Numeracy we are continuing to focus on subtraction as our confidence improves. This week we have also been writing facts about Lunar New Year and enjoyed making a stir fry in Cookery by chopping and cutting various vegetables.
Our highlight of the week however was recreating the Great Race on our Outdoor Learning Day. Everyone, including the teachers were one of the 12 animals. We then found the number to represent where our animal finished and all took part in the race!
