Squirrels News - 20th September 2024
In the Squirrels Classroom our book of the week has been Kind which discusses what it means to be kind and gives various examples of kind acts. The book also highlights that everyone is special, unique and that we all have something positive to give.
With this in mind everyday the Squirrels have been identifying something they have done that day which is kind. We also drew pictures of kind acts in Art and wrote about that specific act in our Literacy Focus Time. We had many wonderful examples such as, helping Mummy to hang the washing up, looking after animals, taking the dog for a walk and sharing toys. It has been lovely to see how this book has really captured the children's imagination. Many children have pointed out kind acts during the week or even independently drawn further pictures of kind acts.
Around the classroom the Squirrels had a great time at the hairdressers in our Role Play Area. They were so kind and courteous, making sure all their customers were happy with their finished hair style. The salon even won 'Best Hairdresser of the Year.' Well done everyone!
In Free Play the children developed perseverance and gained new skills as they explored Tap Tap which entails a cork board, nails, hammers and shapes. The shapes are hammered onto the cork board using the nails. Everyone had a great time with the dolls house, taking on the roles of various family members or friends. In the Outside Learning Environment we explored planting and had lots of fun with scarves, watching them float down from the sky, using them as hair pieces or hats. In Maths we have also been exploring 2D shapes, creating our own robots out of shapes as well as discussing the terms ‘sides’ and ‘corners’.
At the end of the week we headed off again for our second Outdoor Learning Day. The children were very excited to head off to the Post Office where we purchased stamps to stick on our very special letters to our grandparents. The children were amazing in the Post Office as we observed the stamps, noticing that some had the Queen's face on them and some had the King. Having carefully stuck on our stamps we handed our letters over to be posted. We discussed how our letters might be delivered and we had all sorts of ideas including by motorbike as it is faster, a car, bike and many more. We were also lucky to meet a postal delivery worker on our way out of the Post Office and noticed he was using a special trolley on wheels. Once we arrived at the common we recapped our Outdoor Learning Day rules We also used sticks to create 2D shapes, extending our learning from earlier in the week and identified how many sides and corners the shapes had.
