Squirrels News - 22nd September 2023

This week our topic book has been, This Rock is Mine! by Kaye Umansk. This book focuses on the topic of sharing. In the story neither frog wishes to give up the rock, both believing it is theirs but eventually fate leads to them both leaving the rock and setting up home on a new one together. This offered a great opportunity to continue our conversations about sharing things and helped us talk about how we can share toys at nursery which we can sometimes find difficult. To really bring the book to life we created frogs using clay which we painted green once they had dried before placing them on their rocks.

This week we have also introduced the Wright brothers as our people of interest and have been learning about the invention of the aeroplane. This has really captured the children's imagination, particularly as many of the Squirrels love anything to do with vehicles, construction and DT. We will be learning about the Wright brothers all of this term before looking at a new person of interest in the Spring term. To go alongside our focus on the Wright brothers we visited the airport in our Role Play Area, which sparked lots of communication and language around holidays we have been on.

In other areas of the classroom we have been developing our counting skills as we counted moveable and static objects. We have also been discussing our Weekend News and continue to have great fun in our weekly Spanish sessions.

On our Outdoor Learning Day we continued to focus on the rules of the session which keep us safe, such as staying within the cones. We also discussed what happens to our rubbish as we walked around Balham on rubbish collection days in between singing our songs for Harvest Festival next week.
