Squirrels News - 3rd November 2023
It was lovely to welcome the Squirrels back into the nursery after the half term break. Our topic book was Dick the Delightful Duck by Kaye Umansky which looks at helping people. Dick the duck is always very helpful to everyone. However, one day he wakes up on the wrong side of the bed, as can happen sometimes. His friends are surprised that he is very grump but they all rally round to help him as he would help them.
To continue with our focus on helping others, in Art we have been drawing pictures of the different ways we can help others and how they help us.
Around the classroom we went camping in our Role-Play Area which we used to open up a discussion about fireworks and how to stay safe around them with bonfire night coming up.
We developed our cutting and creative skills as we cut up old birthday cards, we matched letters to make CVC words, explored numbers and counting as well as exploring the dolls house where the children enjoyed creating various roles for the people and animals who lived there or popped round to visit.
In other Focus sessions we have been exploring 2D shapes, naming them as well as discussing how many sides and corners each shape has. The children have been thinking about various emotions and trying to figure out what makes them feel certain ways and how they could make themselves feel better if they are feeling sad or angry.
On our Outdoor Learning Day we continued to think about our emotions and what makes us feel certain ways. The children then went off and used natural objects to create faces, naming the emotions they had given them. Having had a lot of discussion around bonfire night a few of the children identified that the loud bangs from the fireworks make them scared whilst others recognised that they were ok with this noise. Finally we enjoyed practising our Christmas songs as we started to prepare for our upcoming Christmas Nativity at the end of term. before
It has been a wonderful first week back after half term and we can’t wait for what next week has in store!
