Kits News - 3rd November 2023

The Kits have had a great week this week. Our topic book was 10 Little Robots by Michael Brownlow and we have been spending the week focusing on technology, counting and number recognition.

On Monday during our Drama Focus Time we developed the children’s confidence as they took turns to go in the middle of the circle and developed their gross motor skills and imagination as we pretended to move like robots. All the children are developing their confidence when performing in front of each other and it is lovely to see them helping their less confident friends as they take turns in pairs, holding hands.

Throughout the week have been making our own robots out of shapes and different construction resources and developing our Maths skills as we counted how many legs and arms they have. In Art we made our own robots, painting boxes and then covering them in foil and other DT items to add texture and details. The children loved painting the boxes in the classroom and we also extended the activity to painting boxes and pans covered in foil in our Outdoor Learning Environment. We have explored resources such as the cogs, promoting critical thinking and developing the children’s understanding of cause and effect and how things work.

During our Science Focus Time on Thursday we engaged in a deconstruction activity where the children used real screwdrivers and pliers to take apart old appliances such as a toaster and iron. Before starting the activity, we recapped on being careful and safe with the tools and we were very impressed at the mature way in which the children handled them. Engaging in activities such as deconstruction expands the children’s knowledge and introduces them to new vocabulary which in turn relates to our learning of the Cultural Capital as they engage in new experiences within the nursery.
