Squirrels News - 20th October 2023

Our topic book this week was The Leaf Thief by Alice Hemming. This book tells the story of a squirrel who thinks the other animals are stealing the leaves from his tree. However, he is reminded by his friend the bird that this happens every year because of a change in the seasons. Bird gently informs the squirrel all about Autumn and how the wind carries the leaves away. The Squirrels loved this story and it helped inform a range of Autumn themed activities throughout the week.

In Art we created our own autumnal tree, sponging the trunk and potato stamping the leaves. We then collaged and painted the animals from our book.

In Dance we went on a trip to the park. We wanted to have a picnic but kept having to find a different spot as the wind or rain kept following us! Eventually we found a nice cubby hole to enjoy our picnic. In Sport we developed our ball skills as we focused on controlling the ball using little kicks. We then balanced along a rope before we had to jump under the rope to catch it then crawl and roll under the rope without touching it. Both of these were brilliant sessions to continue developing the children’s gross motor skills and it’s amazing to watch their confidence and abilities grow.

In class we have been discussing reasons we have so far enjoyed being in Squirrel class. This ranged from enjoying Spanish, playing with the toys, looking after Tango (the class fish) to playing with the teachers and everything in between.

It has been a wonderful half term and we look forward to what the rest of this term brings in the Squirrel classroom.
