With the excitement of World Book Day in the air we’ve spent the week thinking about who which characters we would like to dress up as!
To celebrate, we started our week by looking at some of our favourite books. We discussed why they were our favourites and recounted the stories to each other. In Art, we spoke about our favourite characters and used colouring pencils to illustrate them. The children looked carefully at the pictures they were copying from, focusing on shape, colour, positioning and size
To continue our focus on books we decided to open a Book Shop in our Role Play area. The children enjoyed purchasing books for themselves and their friends to read, remembering to pay close attention to the blurb on the back of the book to help them identify if it sounded like a book they would enjoy. When we visited the Library this week we also checked the blurb on the back of the books we wanted to borrow to make sure we wanted to read them.
In Literacy we took our learning outdoors and created stories out of story stones the children had created. Each child chose four objects and a character which we used to create a story around. All of the objects and the characters had to be within the children’s story, either playing a starring role or popping up at some point. It was a wonderful activity which not only extended to children’s imagination and creative ideas but also leadto some wonderful stories!
When World Book Day finally arrived, we all had great fun dressing up as book characters and sharing lots of stories throughout the day. In Numeracy we started to learn about O’clock and spoke about different times of the day and the key things that take place such as arriving in class and lunch time. The children loved this topic and have been spotting clocks all over the Nursery, waiting in anticipation for it to be the next O’clock!
On the walk to common for our Outdoor Learning Day we spotted letters in the environment before arriving at the common to read a few stories. This week we developed our mathematical skills by matching the correct number of natural objects to the numeral given. We all loved this activity, and it created a great game where the children went looking for the biggest stick to add to their quantity or the most unusual leaf!
