Kits News - 12th May 2023

The Kits have had a great week this week. Our topic books were ‘Whatever Next!’ By Jill Murphy and ‘Playtime with Ted’ by Sophy Henn and the intention of these stories was to extend the children’s imagination as we pretended that boxes were different things.

In Art this week the children created their own DT models from cardboard boxes and a range of different materials such as bottle lids, tinfoil and bubble wrap. We talked to the children about their creations as they made them and asked them what they were. The children talked about the materials they used and the shape of the bottle lids and described their models as things such as “a caterpillar,” and “a crocodile boat.”

We are working on developing the children’s confidence within the Kits and plan group circle games to support this. On Friday we played a game of ‘Jack in the Box’ where each child had a turn to hide in the box and then jump up, surprising their friends and making then laugh. All the children had a turn to hide in the box and we were impressed with how they embraced this new experience.

We have also been exploring boxes in our Role Play area, pretending they are boats, trains, cars and beds and drawing on them on the outside and the inside in our mark-making area. The children found it a squeeze inside the boxes if too many climbed in at once, but they listened to their teachers’ instructions to take turns and used the sand timer to help them do this.

In our Maths Focus Time we developed our imagination as we made arrangements with objects and built with the different shaped building blocks. As well as describing their creations, the children talked about the shapes of the blocks they used and with the support of their teachers, counted how tall their towers were.
