Kits News - 14th October 2022

The Kits started off their week with a ‘Porridge Party’ in aid of Mary’s Meals. The children used fruit to decorate and make smiley faces on top of their bowls of porridge and the highlight was eating the porridge at the end!

Mary’s Meals is a charity which provides more than 1.1 million children with a daily meal in their education establishment. The children loved eating their porridge and we discussed the importance of sharing and giving to others.

In preparation for our Porridge Party we chose the topic book Goldilocks and the Three Bears and the children have engaged in the story at Circle Time as well as re-enacting the tale through small world play and role-play.

Our role-play area has been set up as ‘The Three Bears Cottage’ this week and the children have been busy pretending to make porridge with ‘loose parts’ such as cotton reels and corks to make the bears and their friends some delicious breakfasts.

In our Maths Focus Time, we looked at size as we compared big, small and medium sized objects. With this activity we also supported the children’s Communication and Language development as we introduced new vocabulary and the children started to piece two words together.

The children have been very interested in dressing up and following this interest, we decided to make bear masks from paper plates in Art. The children then placed their faces through the plates to make different facial expressions such as happy, sad and shocked as we retold the story of ‘Goldilocks and the Three Bears’.

We have also been working on our fine motor skills and pincer grip. During our Science activity we looked at colour mixing and used pipettes to suck up coloured water and then squirt them onto tissue paper. The children were fascinated by the effect and loved watching the new colours appear as they mixed together.

In our Fine Motor Skills Focus Time we explored a number of different ‘Practical Life’ activities such as pouring, threading and posting to help support the development of their hand strength and dexterity.
