Kits News - 18th October 2024

The Kits have had another busy week, and we have enjoyed our Topic Story, We’re Going on a Leaf Hunt by Steve Metzger. This book is about three friends who go on a fun leaf-finding adventure. There are lots of trees and leaves to find throughout their journey. They hike over a mountain and go through a forest to collect leaves of all kinds and colours. The Kits loved joining in with the repeating phrases from the story and exploring activities related to an autumn theme throughout the week.

On our Community Walk this week we observed the different coloured leaves we could find. We looked at the trees around us and at leaves that had fallen from the branches. The children spotted some red, green, yellow, brown, and some with yellow speckles on them.

During Free Play, the children actively engaged with Kinetic Sand and moulds. They used their hands to fill up the moulds and make patterns using sticks. They also explored several stacking shapes, actively practising the naming of all the different 2D shapes and naming colours. Elsewhere in the classroom they matched a Leaf Shape game, actively practising naming 2D shapes and discussing the different colours too.

In the Outdoor Learning Environment the Kits loved making leaf soup using several pots, water, scoops, and leaves, stirring and transferring their soup from one pot to another. The Kits also used magnifying glasses to observe all the natural objects with bugs in the tuff tray. We discussed where conkers come from while adding the conkers and pine cones to the small containers. The children then practised counting how many they had found.

The Kits have been practising their Gross Motor Skills this week by using the Climbing Wall, ladder and slide with their friends. They completed an obstacle course using several skills such as jumping, throwing and balancing and played with balls by throwing them in several ways and kicking them.

Our Role-Play Area has been very popular this week where the children acted out being professional Hairdressers. They used several one-handed tools, such as hair dryers, curlers, shampoo, conditioner, combs, brushes, curlers, wigs, and mannequin heads. The Kits have been working together to make their clients happy!

The Kits loved our Art project this week where they showcased their creativity. They squeezed Metallic paint from bottles onto their paper which was placed inside a tray. Next, marbles were placed on top and then the children moved the tray from side to side to create their beautiful patterns. Once that had dried, the children added different coloured leaves, and we discussed the changes of Autumn.

In Cookery this week, the children made Banana Bread. The Kits peeled and chopped the banana using a knife. They then used a fork to mash it up in a bowl. We named all the ingredients and read the instructions together. All the ingredients were measured and placed into the mixture before mixing it and putting it in the oven to cook. We all discussed our likes and dislikes and talked about how the mixture looked. We all said that we liked bananas!

The children practised threading buttons and cotton reels during our Fine Motor Focus lesson. The children used good concentration by threading several buttons using a shoelace. They then decided to add cotton reels. We counted how many we had once they had finished. For our Maths Focus lesson, the Kits practised Positional Language. The children practised placing items in several different places by following instructions. They then completed their activity sheet by placing pine cones on the tree in several areas. The Kits learnt all about Autumn through natural objects. The children touched and felt items and named them.

We look forward to more fun activities next week!
