This week we have continued to learn about Christmas and the children have been practising their songs brilliantly for our annual Nativity play. During Free Play we have engaged in a range of festive activities including refining our fine motor skills as we stuck stickers on Christmas trees and making Christmas ‘cookies’ with the playdough and gems.
During our Communication and Language Focus Time we developed the children’s vocabulary and learning around the Cultural Capital as we played a game with a Christmas ‘magic bag’. The children all had a turn to pick a Christmas themed object out of the bag and we then described the object and talked about it as a group. The children were very excited to pull the different festive objects out and we learnt lots of new words such as ‘wreath’, ‘cracker’ and ‘bauble’.
We have been keeping warm with our weekly Sports sessions with Coach Athina and it’s been lovely to watch how much the children love having the opportunity to be active, developing their gross motor skills and comprehension as they listen to and follow Coach Athina’s instructions. During Sports the children engage in a number of different activities such as throwing and kicking balls, sorting cones by colour and running around a track, learning how to negotiate the space safely. All the children have great fun in these activities and it is one of the highlights of our week!
During our Science Focus Time on Thursday we explored textures as we made fake snow. The children were all very good at waiting for their turn to mix the salt, bicarbonate of soda, soap and water together with a spoon and were very excited to observe it turn into ‘snow’. They spent time developing their hand strength as they squashed the dough into balls and even made some small snowmen! We talked about what the ‘snow’ felt and smelt like and the children used descriptive words such as ‘soft’, ‘crunchy’ and ‘nice’.
