Kits News - 1st July 2022
The Kits have had a lovely week and our topic book was Summer Days and Nights by Wong Herbert Yee. During the week we have been talking about Summertime, trips to the parks, the seaside and the weekend fun we have with our friends and family. In Art we have been exploring using watercolours to help us create blue summer skies and had a lot of fun with the glitter as we made sparkly suns to stick on our skies.
Our role-play area has been set up as a ‘Hairdressers’ for the week and the children have loved styling their friends and their teachers’ hair. They have taken it in turns with the brushes, combs and wigs and have loved re-enacting familiar scenes from the hairdressers.
While playing in the Outdoor Learning Environment the children have been having fun developing their gross motor skills as they played chase around the grass and made obstacle courses with the cones, hoops and tunnel.
During our communication and language Focus Time this week we focused on our listening skills through playing a listening game with the iPad. The children listened to animal, vehicle and environmental sounds on the iPad and had to try and identify the different sounds they could hear. The different sounds prompted lots of conversations among the Kits about farms and beaches and helped developed their Communication and Language skills.
During our Cookery Focus Time this week we engaged in a food tasting activity. We talked to the children about the couscous, chickpeas, spinach, celery, mango and melon and discussed where they come from, their colours and textures. The children then smelt the different foods and tasted them, describing their tastes and textures as ‘sweet’, ‘juicy’ and ‘crunchy’. The activity supported the children’s personal, social and emotional development as they took risks trying the new foods and also supported their health and self-care abilities as they feed themselves with their fingers and some of them used a spoon or fork.
