Kits News - 28th April 2023

The Kits have had a wonderful first week of the Summer Term. Our topic books have been Love from the Crayons by Drew Daywalt and We love Each Other by Yusuke Yonezu. We used the books as a platform to recap on our Classroom Principles and especially ‘Kind Hearts’, discussing what using our ‘Kind Hearts’ means.

We have also extended this to discussing who we love and who loves us with lots of lovely conversations with the children about their families and friends. During our Communication and Language Focus Time on Wednesday we looked at the children’s ‘Emotion Mats’, which contain pictures of their loved ones. They were very excited to tell us about the memories they have with their family members and we discussed birthdays and holidays.

The books also focus on colours and shapes and we have spending time this week exploring both. In Maths we looked at shapes and have been spending time experimenting at combining shapes together to make new ones, such as two semi-circles to make a circle or two rectangles to make a square. We have cut out shapes with the playdough and drawn around shape stencils on the table.

We have also been exploring colours in Art and Science. In Art we explored mixing colours as we painted a heart and then folded it over to mix the different colours together. We talked about the new colours made, with one child saying “It looks like a rainbow!” We also explored colour in Science as we used pipettes to squirt different coloured water onto tissue paper. We learnt about absorption and which secondary colours are made as we mix primary ones together. At the end of the week on Friday, we went on a colour hunt during our Community Walk where we walked around the streets of Balham, naming the different colours of the cars, busses and lorries we saw.
