Kits News - 30th September 2022

The Kits topic book this week was My World, Your World by Melanie Walsh and we have used the story as a platform to talk about our families and to discuss the differences and similarities between us.

We continued these discussions across the week and in Circle Time we have been learning how to say words in each other’s languages and talking about the different ways people live all over the world.

In Art we made puppets of different colours and with different features. To make the puppets the children used a sewing machine with support from their teachers and they were fascinated to see how it works. They increased their confidence as they tried a new activity and were fascinated to explore the machine, pointing at the dials and twisting the knobs. Once the two pieces of material were sewn together the children all glued buttons, material and wool to add the different features needed to create the puppets face! They loved this activity and it has been lovely to watch them singing songs with the puppets and everyone is looking forward to taking them home once they are dry next week.

During our Communication and Language Focus Time we engaged in small world play with the dolls’ house people and talked about our families and what we do at home. The children also looked at their ‘Emotion Mats’ which contain pictures of their families and friends and they were very excited and animated to tell us who they were.

On Thursday we had a food tasting session with different vegetables and grains from around the world. We tried edamame beans, rice, corn, peppers, celery, tomatoes and olives. The children all used knives to cut the vegetables and then a used a range of cutlery including forks, spoons and even chopsticks to eat them with. It was great to see all of the children trying the different vegetables and this was a great activity to encourage the children to explore their likes and dislikes.

The Role Play Area this week has been set up as a ‘Hair Dressers’ and the children have loved styling both each other’s and their teachers’ hair. The activity has developed the children’s social skills as they talk to each other and engage in imaginary role play.
