Squirrels News - 7th October 2022
Our topic book this week has been the story Pick A Circle Gather Squares: A Fall Harvest of Shapes by Felicia Sanzari Chernesky and this has offered a wonderful platform to continue our learning and discussions about the harvest.
It was also a brilliant book to help us prepare for our harvest festival celebrations! We were thrilled to be able to invite the parents into the nursery and the children were extremely excited to get up on to the stage for the first time this year and let everyone hear their wonderful singing. They particularly enjoyed the song 'Big Red Combine Harvester', which they sang with great gusto. In class we discussed why the harvest is so important and that the food we had brought in would go to help people less fortunate. This in turn led to a discussion on the importance of sharing and being good friends.
Aside from celebrating the harvest festival our main focus for the week was discovering 2D and 3D shapes. We learnt some actions to help us remember which were which and went on a shape hunt during our Outdoor Learning Day to see if we could find any of the shapes we had learnt about in nature. We came across a lot of cylinders when looking at all the poles and lamp posts we passed!
On our Outdoor Learning Day we collected conkers and used conker drills to develop the strength in our hands. This was a little bit tricky at first but we all persevered and everyone was fascinated to see what the inside of a conker looks like!
As well as increasing our understanding of the world around us this activity supports the children’s strength and hand skills in preparation for writing at life at primary school.
It has been another exciting week and we can’t wait for the next one. I wonder what it will bring?
