Kits News - 7th October 2022
The Kits have had a great week this week. We started the week with our Harvest Festival Celebrations with Pastor Jim giving a service in the church. It was lovely that so many of our parents could join us for the service and the children loved listening to Pastor Jim as well as singing and dancing to our Harvest songs.
Our topic book this week has been Cows in the Kitchen by June Crebbin and we combined this with the Harvest theme to talk about farms and how and why we harvest fruit and vegetables.
Throughout the week we have continued to sing our Harvest songs and the song which accompanies the book ‘Cows in the Kitchen’. The Kits have loved singing and as well as supporting their confidence, singing also helps develop the children’s communication and language skills as they learn about rhyme and rhythm and develop their vocabulary.
In the Outdoor Learning Environment, we have been busy digging for real potatoes and carrots and engaging in small world play with the farm animals and diggers, re-enacting farmyard scenes. The animals are very popular with the children and they have been a great resource to support their communication and language development as we talk about what the animals are doing, their names and mimic the noises they make.
In Art we recreated the story from ‘Cows in the Kitchen’. The Kits began by sticking pictures of furniture and kitchens onto their pieces of paper and then they used the toy animals to print footprints on top as they jumped up and down.
During Cookery this week we took our carrots and potatoes from the garden and combined them with some broccoli to make a delicious Autumn vegetable soup. The children used knives to cut the pre-cooked vegetables and then transferred them all into a bowl ready to blend. The teachers talked to the children about the blender, describing how it works and we recapped on our understanding of how some kitchen utensils must be used by a grown up. Once the soup was ready the children sat together and used spoons to eat it, discussing the textures and whether they like it or not!
This was a great activity to support the children’s fine motor skills and expand their understanding of how vegetables grow, cooking, and healthy eating !
