Kits News - 3rd March 2023
The Kits have had a great week and our highlight was celebrating ‘World Book Day’ on Thursday! World Book Day is one of our favourite annual events and the children enjoy dressing up as much as the teachers!
The Kits’ costumes were amazing and they were all very excited to show each other their new outfits. During the week we have been enjoying finding out about the children’s favourite books from home and have been reading them at Circle Times, in Free Play and during our Focus Time session where we had a ‘Snuggly Read’ under the blankets in the Outdoor Learning Environment.
The children have developed their Communication and Language and Comprehension skills as they have talked about their favourite characters and discussed key events from the stories. The topic of ‘World Book Day’ also teaches them ‘British Values’ as they learn to respect each other’s choices and opinions.
In Art we made collages using some familiar book characters and it was a great opportunity to support the children’s Communication and Language development as we talked about ‘Thomas’ and ‘Peppa’. We also made puppets using sticks and paper, which the children used to make-up and tell their own stories to their friends.
During our Science Focus Time this week we made our own playdough. The children love playing with playdough during Free Play so we thought it would be a brilliant opportunity to develop their understanding of the world and materials by showing them them how it was made. They all helped measure the different ingredients and then used a spoon to mix them together. We spent time mark making in the flour and then the children strengthened their hand muscles as the squashed and squeezed the dough into different shapes.
In our Maths focus time on Tuesday we looked at matching shapes and pictures as we completed some puzzles and on Friday we developed our hand strength as we practised using the scissors. Being able to use scissors supports the children’s fine motor skills and also teaches them how to use sharp tools safely.
