Kits News - 3rd May 2024

The Kits have had a wonderful week and the children have been very engaged with our Topic Book 10 Little Pirates by Mike Brownlow. They love engaging in Role-Play together, often taking on the roles of pirates, and the topic has provided a great opportunity to further extend their imaginary play.

During our Drama lesson on Monday we went on a treasure hunt around the classroom and Outdoor Learning Environment, looking for gold coins and shiny jewellery and worked as a team as we collected the treasure together, counting it at the end.

In Art we made ‘Pirate Telescopes’ with cardboard tubes, paint, foil and glitter and also our own abstract ‘Pirate Parrots’ with paint, feathers and googly eyes. The children loved exploring the different materials, especially the glitter, and talked to their teachers about the different colours and textures.

During our Cookery Focus Time this week, we made a puff pastry treasure map! The children worked together as a group to make the ‘map’, spreading passata and cheese on top of the pastry and then adding olives and peppers to add map items, not forgetting a cross to mark the treasure! We talked about what kind of treasure our map may lead to as it baked in the oven and then the children were very excited to take a segment home at the end of the day.

We have been focusing on counting throughout the week with various activities during Free Play and during our Focus Times. We have been practising with the children how to slow down their counting, to count one object at a time, and also to name the numbers in the correct sequence. During our Maths Focus Time, we counted the Unifix cubes and then the children stuck pirates to their activity sheets and practised counting objects in an irregular order.
