Kits News - 7th July 2023

The Kits had a wonderful last week of term. Our topic book this week was The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle and it has been a great platform to discuss transitions and change with the children prior to the end of term, and the start with their new groups in September. The children all spent time with their new teachers in our special ‘Moving-up Morning’ on Tuesday and the older Kits enjoyed looking around the Squirrels’ classroom, familiarising themselves with the toys and having a lovely time with Miss Ruth and Miss Kirsty.

Our activities have been informed by The Very Hungry Caterpillar story and we’ve used it as an opportunity to extend our learning about the life-cycle of a butterfly. The children have loved exploring our ‘Story Sack’ and retelling the story with their friends as they look at the caterpillars, butterflies and different foods that the caterpillars eat. ‘Story Sacks’ are a great way to help children become more familiar with a story and supports them in being able to retell it independently, developing their literacy skills.

We have also been dancing like butterflies in Drama and learning about the life cycle of the butterfly in Science. We have been fortunate enough to have our own real-life caterpillars at the Nursery and throughout the past few weeks the children have watched them closely as they have grown bigger and bigger and eventually built cocoons. What great timing it was that the butterflies hatched this week and the children could see the butterflies up close! We explained that we needed to give them some fruit to eat while their wings became strong enough to fly and then we set them free in our Outdoor Learning Environment. It was wonderful to see the butterflies fly away and we all said that we would keep an eye out for them in our back gardens over the Summer!
