Kits News - 9th June 2023
The Kits have had a lovely first week back after the half term break and we have loved hearing all about the children’s half term news. Our topic book this week was Shh! We have a Plan by Chris Haughton and the book has been a great platform to explore colour as well as to practice our counting and learn about how to care for birds.
In our Art activity the children have created their own birds using paint, feathers, beaks and googly eyes. The art has been completely child led and it is wonderful to see all their different creations, they truly are very colourful!
We have been exploring shapes throughout the week and in our Maths Focus Time the children made arrangements with circles and triangles, bringing them together to make what looks like a bird.
A highlight of the week has been going on ‘bird hunts’ in our Outdoor Learning Environment and the children have been fascinated by the photos of birds which we find in the parks and in our gardens. They have been learning the names of the birds and we have been introducing new vocabulary as we’ve looked at images of magpies, pigeons, robins, crows and blackbirds.
On Friday we looked for real birds in our local environment during our Community Walk. We listened closely and could hear lots of swallows and were lucky enough to also see some pigeons. We also learnt about caring for birds and how we can give them extra food to supplement what they find naturally. We used bird seed and lard to make our feeders and the children took turns to carefully mix the two ingredients together in a bowl. They used spoons to spoon the mixture into small yogurt pots to take home and the children were very excited to show them to their parents at the end of the morning. We hope the birds enjoy eating their food and we look forward to hearing if any come and eat it from your gardens!
