Squirrels News – 10th June 2022

It has been wonderful to welcome the Squirrels back after the half term break and this week our book was Somebody Swallowed Colin by Sarah Roberts.

This book is all about recycling and why it is important. Poor Collin the crisp packet doesn’t belong on the ground or in the water where he can endanger the lives of all the animals who encounter him. We learn that he would much rather be recycled and turned into a wonderful watering who can help life to flourish instead of endangering it.

The children thoroughly enjoyed this book and love learning about all things recycling. It also opened up lots of conversations around why its important to look after our planet as well as the different ways we can all do this at home and in our environment.

In Art we had a great time making recycling posters with slogans such as, “the animals can’t be in the sea with the rubbish. It makes them sick and they will die. Put it in the bin!” and “please put your rubbish in the bin or the world will turn in to a world rubbish bin.”

Our Role Play area was also turned into a campsite but unfortunately each morning it had been left in a mess so the children had to sort and recycle rubbish left behind by the previous evening’s campers. It wasn’t a pleasant start to their camping adventure but they all worked hard to make the campsite clean again. If only people would recycle!

This week we also focused on addition sentences to 10 and estimating how many objects we had before counting them. We extended this on our Outdoor Learning Day where we continued to look at numbers by creating them out of natural objects and finding the right quantity of objects to match each number in our number line.

Whilst we were outside it was also the perfect time to continue to recycle out in the real world. Whilst the children loved helping to keep our environment clean it was a shame to see how much rubbish we collected. Remember to recycle!
