Squirrels News - 19th May 2023

This week the children have been hard at work creating various art pieces as we get ready for our art exhibition next Friday. We have been studying Kristjana S Williams and colouring in world and local area maps using pencils. We have also explored the work of Miranda Lloyds and using acrylics and instruments to create a sense of texture.

Our Role Play Area has continued to be set up as an art studio where we have used paint and ink to create wonderful masterpieces. Around the classroom we developed our cutting skills, created sculptures with various construction pieces and built words with magnetic letters.

The highlight of the week however was our visit to Dulwich Picture Gallery. We were lucky enough to receive a tour of the gallery and hear more about the meaning behind the paintings on display. We stood in front of various pieces discussing what we could see and the colours which had been used. We talked about the fact everything in the piece has a purpose and that many of the pieces had taken years to paint. We compared two pictures of The River Thames to pictures of it today, noticing that there are far less boats on the river and the skyline is different. Some of the children decided to add further things to the modern-day skyline when we stopped to draw. We then went to look at a picture of Princess Victoria aged four, who was dressed in black to mourn the passing of her father three years earlier. We decided we would replicate the picture to give her some cheerful clothes for when she came out of mourning.
