To prepare for our Sports Day celebrations at the end of the week we have been reading the book I Really Want to Win by Simon Phillips which has allowed us to think about competitions and to talk about our feelings related to them. We have also introduced the idea that whilst we may hope to win, it is not always possible and that is ok.
To continue this, we have been playing various board games around the classroom and have discussed that we cannot always have a turn for certain activities during Circle Time. Whilst this is a tricky concept the children have been trying extremely hard and it’s been great to see how well they have been doing at taking turns.
When thinking about winning, losing and taking part in competitions we discussed our feelings around these concepts and thought of a time when we had been in one of these situations and how we felt. Many of the children were able to identify that losing makes them feel "cross" and we explored why this could be and what may help in these situations.
When Sports Day finally arrived, the children were extremely excited and had a wonderful time showing their grown-ups the fantastic races they had been practicing. It was wonderful to see everyone with a happy smile on their face regardless of their position in the races and everyone cheering on the other children in the Nursery.
To finish the week, we had a lovely Outdoor Learning Day where we carried on with our focus on competitions by creating various races to recreate the fun from the previous day at Sports Day. The children absolutely loved it. What a delightful week!
