This week we have been learning about strangers and ‘better’ strangers and to support our learning we chose the book Who’s Bad and Who’s Good, Little Red Riding Hood? by Steve Smallman. The children enjoyed exploring this book and it was a great story to get us thinking about what makes a stranger better than other strangers. In the book Little Red Riding Hood meets a funny looking wolf and a cute white bunny. We have to help her decide who's bad and who's good. We discover that appearances can often be deceptive as the story reveals that wolf was actually the better stranger not the rabbit who everyone first thought!
The booked offered a great springboard to discuss what we thought makes a stranger a better stranger and why we used the term ‘better’ instead of good. The children came to understand that we used the term ‘better’ because even though we should try and seek help from better strangers where possible, we can never truly say they are a good stranger as we can never be 100% sure.
In other areas of the classroom, we prepared for Mother’s Day by making cards and finishing off our special Mother’s Day books as well as repairing several number lines which were missing some of their numerals.
When we went on our Outdoor Learning Day this week the children used their understanding of our topic to recognise better strangers as we walked to the common. It was also lovely to hear from a few parents that the children had been talking to them about the topic.
As it was our last Outdoor Learning Day before the Easter break, we took part in a wonderful easter egg hunt around the common where the children took it in turns to find an egg with a hidden clue inside which instructed us on how to find the next egg. The children solved the clue together before one of them went off to find the next egg, leading to the ultimate prize in the final egg of some special treats!
We had a wonderful Dance session this week where we used props to become cygnets, bunnies, butterflies, and chicks. We finished the week by celebrating with a wonderful easter parade where the children wore their special easter bonnets and walked through the pensioner’s lounge to show all of their creations!
It has been a lovely way to end the Spring term, in the sunshine and with lots of easter themed fun. We hope everyone has a wonderful break!
